"Groups Commit $200M to African Colleges," by Kim Gamel - AP (New York), 17 Sept 2005
Six American foundations are donating $200 million to support universities in seven African nations.
The funding, announced Friday by U.N. Secretary-General Kofi Annan, will be spread over five years and builds on $150 million already spent by four of the foundations in Ghana, Mozambique, Nigeria, South Africa, Tanzania and Uganda. Kenya was recently added.
More than $5 million of the new money will help universities obtain eight times the amount of Internet bandwidth available to them two years ago, at less than a third of the price being paid now....
Annan was joined for the announcement, made at the Ford Foundation, by the presidents of Ghana, Kenya and Mozambique....
Annan singled out the need to train teachers, increase research capacity, strengthen open universities and distance learning programs, and ensure access to the latest technologies.
The Rockefeller, Carnegie, Ford and MacArthur foundations are being joined in the project by the Andrew W. Mellon and William and Flora Hewlett foundations.
